There are several interesting matchups when you look at the NCAA rankings in this year’s bowl games.

It will be strength vs strength in the Armed Forces Bowl as Houston’s #1 pass offense goes up against Air Force’s #1 pass defense.

In the Fiesta Bowl, Boise St’s #1 scoring offense faces TCU’s #1 total defense.

The Hawaii Bowl features two teams with contrasting styles on both offense and defense. While SMU’s #88 rush defense will face Nevada’s #1 rush offense, the Ponies’ #28 pass offense goes up against the Wolf Pack’s #119 pass defense.

Wyoming is making its first trip to a bowl since 2004, but many of their rankings are not typical of most bowl teams. The Ponies have the #112 total offense, the #111 scoring offense and have only scored 11 TDs in the redzone this year. Also they have been outgained by 97 ypg and outscored by 10.3 ppg.

Florida has several impressive rankings including #3 in scoring defense and #4 in total defense. However, on offense the Gators have scored just 76% of the time inside the redzone including just 28 TDs in 59 trips!

The national title game has several interesting matchups as Texas’ #3 scoring offense takes on the Bama’s #1 scoring defense. Also in the redzone, Texas has scored on 53 of its 56 opportunities including 40 TDs. Meanwhile, Alabama opponents have scored just 8 TDs on 23 opportunities inside the 20.

Steele, you sure missed the boat with Oregon this year. Everytime you picked Oregon to lose I would tell my brother, “Phil Steele does not really know this Oregon team”

My question to you is, will you be on their bandwagon next year?

  • Beat Navy!

    What about Army – Navy?
    What say you?

Navy is going for their record 7th straight Commander-In-Chief trophy. While Navy already has their bid to the Texas Bowl on Dec 31st, Army is playing for their first bowl bid since 1996 and with a win here will play in the EagleBank Bowl on Dec 29th. Navy has the offensive and defensive edges but as always this will be an emotional game. Right now I like Navy, but go to PhilSteele.com in the Wednesday blog where I have a complete write-up on the game.

Coming into the season, I did not think the Ducks would beat USC and Cal at home and their road schedule was tough. They did catch some … See Morebreaks but hats off to the Ducks. I cant get every team right every year and I was patting myself on the back after they did not get a first down until mid 3Q vs Boise. I stand my picks and have the best record over the last 10 years and I am not afraid to go out on a limb. As for next season, it is too early as I'm currently working on next year's magazine by going through the QB, RB, WR, and Special Team positions for every team. After the national title game on PhilSteele.com I will post what I feel will be the preseason AP Top 10 for 2010.
