Orange Bowl

Georgia Tech vs Iowa

Team Rush Pass Points TO’s ST
Georgia Tech 274 90 26 2.1
Iowa 121 210 22 2.7 ••

Gametime Projected Weather: 48° Clear Wind: NW 10 mph

Iowa has an excellent defense and they have had extra time to prepare for the Georgia Tech option attack. LSU had extra time to prepare for it last year in the bowl and dominated 38-3. However this year the Yellow Jackets are running it at a much higher level. The Iowa offense has struggled all year but the two games they lost they were without injured QB Ricky Stanzi who is now back and healthy for this game. After having poor starts to games Stanzi was the master of the fourth quarter leading the Hawkeyes to several 2nd half comebacks. Georgia Tech has a large edge on offense (#11-93) while the Hawkeyes have the large edge on defense (#11-55). I give the special teams edge to Iowa and that could give the Hawkeyes the outright win here.

The MWC lost its first game of the bowl season last night in their most important bowl with Boise St beating TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. The Sun Belt has a chance to finish undefeated if Troy beats MAC Champ Central Michigan in the GMAC Bowl tomorrow. The Big East will finish the bowl season a respectable 4-2 but did get trounced in their BCS game. The Big 12 and SEC have had similar bowl seasons with the Big 12 having a slight advantage in win % and are 4-2 vs BCS conference teams. The National Title game on Thursday between Alabama (SEC) and Texas (Big 12) will decide which conference had the better post season. The Big 10 has a chance to finish the bowl season strong with an Iowa win tonight in the Orange Bowl. The conference was just 9-20 in bowl games from 2005-08 including 1-6 last year however the ACC will finish ahead of the Big 10 if Georgia Tech wins the Orange Bowl.

Bowl Confidence Contest

After 31 bowl games we have a new leader in Rick Perk who has 429 points and a 75% win %. Rick had Boise for 30 points and jumped from 7th to 1st. Yesterdays leader Rusty Moreno is in 2nd with 428 points and Don Seebold despite the loss is still in great shape at #3 with 423 points and an 83% win % which easily ranks 1st. Don still has 85 points left on the board and has the highest possible max score of 508.

The top 3 all have Iowa winning tonight and if the Hawkeyes do win Don Seebold will jump to 1st since he has Iowa for 22 points. Rusty Moreno who has Iowa for 12 points will stay in 2nd and Rick Perk who has Iowa for only 4 points will slide to 3rd. If Georgia Tech wins Rick and Rusty would stay in 1st and 2nd but Donnie Holmann would jump Don Seebold for 3rd since he has the Yellow Jackets for 8 points.

Remember 1st place wins $250, 2nd place gets $100 and a set of regionals and 3rd gets $50 and a set of regionals.
