2010 Players To Circle

The magazine is printed as late as possible and we send it off to the press in the middle of May. 95% of what is written is still completely accurate come August. Every year though there are some players who have left the program for one reason or another during the summer and we will have those players updated in the 2010 “Out for the Year” section, which we have just posted on the site. (see below)

What I do in my personal magazine is circle the players that are lost and that way you can tell at a glance which teams suffer the most attrition and those that do not lose anybody. Prior to the season, the players who were lost during the summer and in fall practice are circled in red while the players lost during the season to injury or suspension are circled in blue.

Here is an example of what my Washington St magazine page looked like at the end of last year. I chose the Cougars because they suffered 67 starts lost to injury last year, the most in the NCAA. Remember when Oklahoma won the National Title in 2000? Not a single OU starter lost a single start due to injury!

This year with the heavy sanctions the NCAA has put on USC, naturally the Trojans have suffered some attrition. Here is what my current magazine page looks like for USC.

Here is the current list for players that have been lost for the year since the middle of May. This includes injuries, transfers, suspensions and dismissals. This list will be updated DAILY so check it often. Any player that will not suit up for 2010 when they were expected to in May needs to be on this list.  If you see any players missing in this list please email brandon@philsteele.com and we will get those players on there ASAP.  Also during the season we will provide an updated starts lost list for each school so you can see which schools are banged up and which fall into the zero starts lost category. This section will also update late additions. Here is the current list.

A few off the top of my head that you haven't noted: Minnesota lost Hugh Thornton (attended a JUCO before Lackawanna, making him ineligible to play D-1 football), Dwight Tillman (same as Thornton), and Sam Maresh (grades); Iowa State lost Scott Haughton (grades); Wisconsin lost Tyler Westphal (transferred to NDSU) and Joe Schafer (transferred to St. Thomas).

DeQuan Bembry was arrested for a DUI in Huntington on Sunday morning, fourth arrest in 16 months, and has been kicked off Thundering Herd roster for good. Head Coach Doc Holliday: “We are disappointed in DeQuan and he is no longer a member of our football team.”

DT Austin Alburtis is rumored to have quit the team. (Link: http://tinyurl.com/33m7ok3)

Phil, what does this tell you about Colorado St.? Is Fairchild going nuts on these guys only looking for the best out of his players (running a hard ass camp). Have you seen this before and what was the outcome for the team out of the gate?

I wouldn't worry too much about it as most of the players were 3rd string or lower rated incoming frosh. The loss of 3 starters particularly 2 on the DL in Zach Tiedgen and Cory Macon leave that position very inexperienced. However, look for soph CJ James to explode onto the scene this year at DE. Thanks, Phil
