% of Tackles Returning
Today’s blog continues my in-depth look at my new and improved experience chart. For 7 years I had listed an experience chart, which broke down the number of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen each team had in the two deep and rated the teams experience level with a formula I devised. In 2009, I made the experience chart FIVE TIMES better. I am just listing the Senior starters, and the seniors in the two deep and the points accumulated by using the system in the magazine (pg 311). In a future blog, I will break down each number of starters for the Junior, Sophomore and Freshman classes. The 2nd factor that goes into my overall chart is the % of yards returning which I featured in the June 4th blog. Another factor listed is the % of lettermen returning and Career OL Starts which I broke down last week. Today I will discuss the % of tackles returning.

San Jose St comes in at #1 with 98.41%. The Spartans are the only team in the FBS that returns all 11 defensive starters and are led by OLB Keith Smith who had 116 tkls. Just two years ago the Cincinnati Bearcats returned only one defensive starter now this year it comes nearly full circle as they return 10 starters and 94.98% of their tackles and are led by MLB JK Schaffer who had 111 tkls last year.
At the bottom of the list are two service academies in Army and Navy who both return less than 38% of their tackles from last year. Keep in mind though generally service academies return much fewer starters than the rest of the schools so these numbers are not that surprising. Ohio does come in at #118 with only 40.21% of their tackles back but they do get the return of LB Noah Keller who had 396 career tkls coming into LY before getting a med RS.
Please check PhilSteele.com everyday to get my Top 30 Countdown, which posted #12 Nebraska and #11 TCU over the weekend. Thru June 15th, I will post both magazine pages on a new team ranked in the Top 30 and you can get an early look on how I breakdown your favorite team. Remember those magazine pages are available for only 24 hours for you to download. Today, Florida St comes in at #10.
I will be back tomorrow to take another factor at my experience chart with the two deep breakdown.
