A couple days ago I started releasing my Preseason All Conference teams and today I will continue with the All-ACC and All-Big 12 teams

11 of the 12 ACC teams have at least one 1st-Team selection on my Preseason All-ACC Team. Clemson leads the way with six 1st-team selections while Florida St and North Carolina each have five 1st-Team players. The Seminoles do lead the way with an overall 20 players which is seven more than Clemson.

9 of the 10 teams in the Big 12 are represented with at least one 1st-Team selection. Oklahoma leads the way with seven players while defending champ Oklahoma St has five and Texas has four. Big 12 newcomers West Virginia and TCU are each well represented as the Moutaineers have three 1st-team selections while TCU has five 2nd-Team selections.

One of the more popular sections of the regional magazines was the Best Case/Worst Case Scenarios where I take a look at the 2010 season and what teams records could have been in the Best Case and the Worst Case scenarios. Sometimes teams with solid winning records caught some breaks and were actually just a few plays away from a losing record. Some teams with losing records may have been just a handful of plays away from a winning record. Listed below are the ACC teams. The Best Case scenario record shows them winning all the games they lost by a TD or less. The Worst Case scenario shows what their record would have been if they had lost all the games they won by a TD or less.

Best Case/Worst Case Scenarios: ACC:

Boston College 2010 Best Case 10-3 Close Losses (3)

FLORIDA ST – Montel Harris rushed for 191 yards and BC led this one 19-17 in the 4Q. Harris got 72 and 48 yd runs but they settled for 33 and 37 yd FG’s and led 6-0. FSU had just 51 yds offense until their final drive of the half where a TD with 1:03 left put them up 14-6. BC had a 198-147 yd edge at the half. BC had a 53 yd IR TD called back on an offsides. FSU got a TD with 10:50 left to take the lead. BC punted with 8:04 left and FSU got 3 FD’s incl a 4&1 at the BC33 and were able to run out the clock.

MARYLAND – MD led 24-7 at the end of 3Q. BC got a TD with 11:20 left then after a deflected pass was caught for a 63 yd gain to the 3, they got a TD with 7:10 left, 24-21. BC got to the MD41 but dropped a slant pass on 4&3 (4:12). BC’s last drive they were SOD at their own 44 with 1:13 left.

NEVADA – A key factor here was BC RB Montel Harris who was supposed to return to the lineup, injured himself in pregame and DNP so BC was missing an important part of their offense. BC got a 32 yd FG with 3:52 left. BC forced a punt with 3:06 left and got out to their 42 but on 2&13 was int’d at their own 47.

The last couple of years, I have I put up a poll for everyone to pick who would win each conference game during the year. I found these results fascinating prior to the year. When you vote in the poll, it tabulates the current % of votes for each team in each individual game. Here are the results of the fan poll from 2009.

When initially reviewing the results I was quite impressed with the accuracy as you the fans did quite well in numerous conferences. In fact, when I calculated the results (similar to what stassen.com does for all the major preseason college football magazines) you guys finished #1!!!! Check out my June 10 Blog for more details.

For the next two weeks, I will be taking a look at the conference teams of the decade for 2000-2009. Factored into my analysis will be conference win %, conference and division titles, bowl games and bowl wins. I will also include BCS bowl wins, final AP rankings and number of national championships for the major conferences. There have been several teams who have changed conferences during that time and I will include them in the analysis for any season(s) they were affiliated with that certain conference. I will also be doing a breakdown of how the conference did in bowl games during the decade and I will emphasis the overall win/loss record, the number of BCS bowl wins, and the records against Non-BCS and ranked bowl teams. When it comes to college football, I am a traditionalist.  The one thing I love about college football is of all the sports, college or pro, the regular season in college football is the one that means the most. I also love the rivalries and the tradition of the bowls. While I have been calling for a system that pits the #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 teams in the Jan 1 bowls for nearly a decade, I am vehemently against an 8 or 16 team playoff which would destroy the bowls and make the regular season meaningless.

In 1995 I was actually sad to see the SWC fold as I really enjoyed the great tradition and history of that conference.

From the recent news of Nebraska joining the Big Ten and Colorado heading to the Pac-10, it looks like college football re-alignment and expansion is going forward and I think it will move quickly. However, unlike some of the past radical changes to college football, I actually look forward to seeing which programs end up where and I salivate at the possibility of there being multiple super conferences. In today’s blog is the current list for Returning Starters for each team in 2010 broken down by offense, defense and special teams. The * on the offense number denotes that the starting QB is returning. Below the alphabetical list I broke down teams with the most/least returning starters followed by a conference by conference breakdown.

One of the great debates in college football every year is which conference is the best. Fans across the country have their opinions and are usually divided to which area they live in. Many fans living in the Midwest have always felt that the Big 10 has been the best conference, while fans living in the South clearly feel that the SEC is the best. One of the ways in determining who has the best conference is taking the conference vs conference records.
