UTEP is thrilled to be back in a bowl after a 4 year hiatus and HC Price called this a snake-bit season with inj’s. The New Mexico Bowl really wanted them here and it is the 2nd time this year that they will be playing in Albuquerque (beat NM Oct 2nd). They are led by RB Buckram who LY had 1,600 yds and should now be healthy as well as QB Vittatoe (avg 209 ypg, 54.5%, 19-10) who battled an ankle injury late in the year. BYU finished the season winning 4 of 5 gms after Mendenhall took over the DC duties and in fact had shutout the L/4 opps at the half. On offense BYU frosh QB Heaps had a 9-1 ratio in his L/4 gms and BYU has a huge schedule edge (#61 vs #117). The Cougars put a cap on a great 2H of the season.

They are also dealing with the departure of HC Kill who took the head job at Minnesota and now are prepped by an interim HC Matukewicz who was the LB’s coach. On the other side Fresno HC Hill has been to 10 bowl games. The Bulldogs have the edge of having already played on the “Blue Turf” earlier this year and has played 7x there S/’02. While Northern has very good players in Harnish (65%) with a 20-5 ratio and RB Spann who was the MAC POY and led in rushing and scoring (20 TD’s), Fresno had a pair of BCS wins TY vs Cincy and Illinois and also had a late lead vs Nevada and Hill has a huge edge with the bowl experience.

Both of these teams had their sights set on conference championships but after failing to reach those goals, meet here in the Superdome. Ohio has struggled in their 2 recent bowls and the last time they came down South, they lost to Southern Miss 28-7. The MAC as a whole is just 1-11 in their L/12 bowl games S/’08. OU QB Jackson will have to sit a bit in this game due to academics but I do like OU having the options with both QB’s and they get a favorable matchup vs a small, aggressive DL (avg 6-2, 257). The Trojans looked like the SBC’s top team early, but dropped two key games as big favorites untill winning their L/2. This is the Trojans’ 3rd trip to this bowl in the L/5Y and they’ve split the two previous meetings. Despite Troy’s experience and crowd edge, I’ll go with the Bobcats who have the better D and can run the ball.

A lot of people ask me if I have a favorite team. I was born and raised and still live in Cleveland, Ohio. I was a fan of many teams as a child but now that I put out a National magazine, I cannot afford to be a fan of any team. I have to pick the teams where I think they will finish each year. I was doing a radio show last week and I was asked if I have a favorite team or teams. My response was a strong YES! The interviewer was surprised by that answer and also eager to hear which team I would pick. My answer was my favorite team each year is the team I pick #1 in the magazine and my favorite teams are the ones I have picked higher than all the other major magazines out there. I then said that each year I establish a list of my favorite teams for that year. I then give this list to my wife. I wear a shirt and tie to work every day during the week and my tie is always a college team. I wear polo shirts during the weekend and when not at work and they are always different college teams. The list I give my wife is the ones to buy that I will be wearing for the upcoming year as these are the teams I will be the biggest fan of for the upcoming season. I was then asked “What teams will your wife be buying ties and shirts of this year? That was a great question and I thought I would answer it in a blog.

I went to preseason.stassen.com to find out where all the magazines have everyone ranked for the upcoming year. Here is the list of teams that I will be rooting for the most this year.

First I want to mention that my favorite shirt is naturally the PhilSteele.com shirt that will soon be available for you to purchase on the PhilSteele.com store but you can get a sneak peek at what they look like by clicking here.

Oklahoma-As I said every year the team that is my pick to win the national title is my favorite team of the year and this year that team is the Oklahoma Sooners who I feel are way undervalued. There are numerous reasons that have them pointing for a banner season. Last year, the Sooners lost 42 starts to injury, which was THIRD highest in the country. Also they suffered four close losses, which means they were just a play or two away in each game from having a much better record. Statistically they were the best team in the entire Big 12 as they outgained their opponents by 133 ypg! They also had an inexperienced offensive line and were starting a frosh QB due to injury. Naturally this year they are in much better shape at both those positions. The Sooners this year remind me very much of my 2008 pick to win it all, which was the Florida Gators. Coming into the season Florida was not even favored to win the SEC East as Georgia finished the 2007 season #2 and were returning both QB Stafford and RB Moreno. Meanwhile the Gators were coming off a four-loss season. However, when the dust cleared on the season, Tebow and company delivered for me as they won the national title. I have picked the Big 12 South winner the last 7 years and will be going for 8 this year. Last year during the Red River Shootout, I was decked out in Texas gear including my Longhorn hat as I picked Texas to play for the national title. However this year I hope Bob Stoops can regain his “Big Game Bob” moniker as I will be decked out in Sooners garb all season.

North Texas-The Mean Green made my most improved list so you knew I was rooting for them right from the start. Over the past 12 years of all the teams that had losing records the previous year, only 20% improve to bowl eligibility the next year. The last two years my Most Improved list has had 69% of the teams go from a losing record to bowl eligibility! Most magazines look at the past performances for North Texas (2-20 last 5 years in the Sun Belt) and pick them 8th in the SBC or 2nd last. Every year is a new year and I think this is the season it all falls into place for NT and I have them THIRD in the Sun Belt! Get me those North Texas polo shirts and ties as I will be rooting for North Texas every week this season!

California - The Bears have been disappointing fans for years. Last year Cal opened the year #12 in the polls and finished unranked and a disappointing 8-5 including a bowl loss to Utah and a blowout 42-10 loss to Washington in their last 2 games. In 2007 they were #12 and finished unranked and just 7-6 needing a bowl comeback win to avoid a losing season. This year writers have thrown Cal in the trash can and they are primarily picked 7th or 8th in the very competitive Pac 10. I have them tied for 3rd! Cal does have the benefit of only 4 Pac 10 road games and one of those is against Wash St meaning most of their winnable games are at home. Both their offensive and defensive lines rank in my top units and I will be rooting for the Golden Bears almost every week this season!

Western Michigan – Bill Cubit is one of the most underrated coaches in the country and I think this year he ends up MAC coach of the year and some smart BCS school snatches him up. Most people when they look at a team look at last years record (5-7) and if the QB and top RB are returning. WM loses both QB Hiller and RB West (1164 yards) and if that is how you rate a team you will not be very high on WM this year. I look at a team that was wiped out on defense last year due to graduation and now has a much more experienced group on that side of the ball. I like the replacements at QB and RB and they are talented at WR and the offensive line. Most have Western finishing FOURTH in the MAC West while I have them playing in the MAC title game. I was an Ohio Bobcat fan last year and they did not disappoint, no doubt I am a huge Broncos fan this year!

USF – USF has been the poster child for an underachieving team the last few years. They have reached the top 10 in both 2007 and 2008 but finished each year unranked. Last year they were an average 8-5 team and they are just 5-9 in Big East play the last two years. The other magazines must be bitter about those finishes as they have pegged them 6th this year despite the fact they return 15 starters including QB BJ Daniels. Remember last year they opened 5-0 despite losing their starting QB Grothe to injury in week 3. The biggest news this year is that Skip Holtz takes over as head coach. The last two years he has had only the 3rd or 4th most talented team in CUSA but has a pair of CUSA championship rings! He gets the most out of the talent on hand and inherits a very talented team. I have them pegged to finish in a tie for 3rd and consider them a Big East title contender this year. I already have a South Florida tie, so I guess I will just pick up a polo shirt this year.

UAB – When Neil Calloway took over he had a scholarship depleted team and were an easy pick for me as I picked them last in the CUSA East and they were 1-7 and landed right there. Calloway has done a solid job the last two years getting the team to go 7-9 in conference play and this year is finally up to scholarship limits and has 16 returning starters to boot. Joe Webb their outstanding QB is gone but that is the only position that is weaker this year. Most magazines have them 5th or 6th but I have them in a tie for 3rd in the CUSA East. This will be the first time in a long time I will be
rooting for the Blazers but I have to think their logos on the Polo shirt would be pretty cool with the Dragon breathing fire, so that should be a good shirt to add to the collection.

Arizona – Last year Arizona was on this list but after checking my closet, I did not get Wildcat polo. Last year Arizona was picked 5th by Lindy’s, 6th by USA Today and EIGHTH by Athlon and The Sporting News and I had them tied for 3rd. Arizona finished tied for 2nd so I was very pleased. Rarely do I get the chance to root for the same team two straight years. This year I picked them tied for third in the Pac 10 again but the other publications have them 5th, 6th or even 7th (Blue Ribbon). Only one source in the country has Arizona RANKED this year and that is my magazine and I consider them a Pac-10 title contender. It is time to get that Wildcat shirt this year!

Miami, Fl- The Hurricanes are my pick to not only win the ACC Coastal this year but they are my favorite to win the overall ACC Title! I have the Canes ranked #9 in the country while other magazines such as Lindy’s, Blue Ribbon and USA Today all picked them to finish as low as 4th in their division!

Penn St-I have the Nittany Lions picked to finish tied for 2nd this year while everyone else has them 4th. I already have a Penn St tie but this year I think it’s time to finally get that polo shirt.

Maryland-Last year I was rooting against Maryland on a weekly basis. Despite coming off an 8 win season that included a bowl win, I picked the Terps to finish in last place which is precisely where they ended up. This year they are in much better shape and make my most improved list. While the Terps are the sheik pick to finish 6th again, I have them rated higher and will be a big fan of them this year in stark contrast to last season.

Michigan-Like I said earlier, I have no allegiances to any team other than where my magazine predicts them. While I have been born and raised in the state of Ohio my entire life and as a child rooted for Ohio St, this year the Wolverines make my most improved list and I have them playing in the Gator Bowl against LSU. While I have the Wolverines picked to finish tied for 5th, other magazines like Athlon and Sporting News have them picked 8th. I will have no trouble rooting for Michigan in most games this year.

Colorado-My first impression of the Buffaloes this year was to pick them to finish 6th in the Big 12 North as they were one of the few teams to make my most improved list but did not go to a bowl as they finished a pathetic 3-9. However, that was my mindset when I started but after compiling all of my research in May, I think they have the most improved OL in the country and will make a bowl this year. I have them picked to finish 4th which is far higher than most of the other magazines. I already have a Colorado polo shirt, now it’s time to get a tie!

Auburn-After I finish writing my magazine in May, I go thru every game of the upcoming season and figure out who I think will be the favorite/dog in each game. After finishing Auburn’s schedule I did not have the Tigers as an underdog in any of their first 11 games (2 pick-ems)! While Auburn is picked to finish 3, 4 or 5 by most magazines this year, I have them picked 2nd in the SEC West thanks to a great SEC schedule. Surprisingly I have no Auburn polo shirts and I definitely think it’s time to pick one up this year!

Ball St-The Cardinals are another team that I rooted against last year, but this year will be rooting heavily for. In 2008, the Cards finished the regular season at 12-0 but the following year, I picked them 5th in the MAC West which is where they ended up. Last year they were very inexperienced and had a new coach. This year they have 19 returning starters and while Stan Parrish’s 4-41-1 overall record as head coach gets a lot of publicity, I think a lot of it is due to mitigating circumstances. I do feel Parrish is a quality coach and will get the most out of his team this year. While most magazines have them picked to finish 5th again, I have them tied for 3rd!

Kent St-Last year the Golden Flashes came close to being a bowl eligible squad as they suffered 3 close losses. This year they get back RB Eugene Jarvis who I am a big fan of and I will call for them to finally break thru as I have them ranked #11 on my most improved list.

Baylor-The Bears have not been to a bowl game since 1994 and this year they make my most improved list (losing season to bowl eligibility). Naturally, I will be rooting for them very hard this year!

Fresno St-Last year the Bulldogs could have beaten both Wisconsin and Cincinnati on the road. While I don’t think they will win at Boise this year, they could upset Nevada at home. I have them tied for 2nd in the WAC which is higher than all the other preseason magazines as the Sporting News and Gold Sheet both have them tied for 5th.

San Diego St-The Aztecs make my most improved list (#6) and have one of the best coaching staffs in the country. This year I think QB Lindley will be more comfortable behind center as the Aztecs make their first bowl game since 1998!

West Virginia-This year I have the Mountaineers tied for first in the Big East which is higher than most of the other preseason magazines. I already have my West Virginia shirt that I wear all the time and this year I will be wearing it some more!

For the next two weeks, I will be taking a look at the conference teams of the decade for 2000-2009. Factored into my analysis will be conference win %, conference and division titles, bowl games and bowl wins. I will also include BCS bowl wins, final AP rankings and number of national championships for the major conferences. There have been several teams who have changed conferences during that time and I will include them in the analysis for any season(s) they were affiliated with that certain conference. I will also be doing a breakdown of how the conference did in bowl games during the decade and I will emphasis the overall win/loss record, the number of BCS bowl wins, and the records against Non-BCS and ranked bowl teams.

While some conferences may have no-brainers as the top team, other conferences were very competitive over the past decade. Here is the schedule for the upcoming week with the conferences I will be analyzing on each date.

Monday Sun Belt
Wednesday, July 7th Big 12
Thursday, July 8th Big 10
Friday, July 9th SEC

The WAC conference in 2000 consisted of Fresno St, UTEP, San Jose St, Tulsa, Rice, Hawaii, SMU and Nevada. In 2001, they added Louisiana Tech and Boise St and stayed at 10 teams for the next 4 years. In 2005 they were raided by CUSA and lost Rice, SMU, Tulsa, and UTEP and replaced them with 3 Sun Belt members in Utah St, Idaho and New Mexico St. Those 3 teams have combined for a record of 15-83 in their 5 years in the league vs other WAC members not including games vs each other (26-94 overall), which has greatly inflated the rest of the leagues team records.

Here are my overall rankings for WAC team of the decade.

With all factors considered, Boise St is clearly the team of the decade for the WAC with more than triple the number of points than 2nd place Fresno. Boise St has lost 4 WAC games in 9 years and is 61-2 since in their last 8 years! That is remarkable! The Broncos have won 7 titles (1 of those was co-title) while UTEP, Hawaii, Nevada and Louisiana Tech have one apiece. Fresno does have the 2nd best win % mark in the league and while the Bulldogs have shockingly not won a title they have 9 bowl berths with 4 wins over BCS conf teams in bowl games.

Hawaii had a resurgence under former HC June Jones and thanks to their magical season in 2007 where they made a trip to the Sugar Bowl, the Warriors come in 3rd. Nevada and Louisiana Tech also had nice decades with each winning one WAC title but the Wolf Pack edge out the Bulldogs with 5 bowl appearances to finish #4.

There will be a new school crowned team of the decade for the upcoming ten years as the Broncos will be moving to the MWC next year and will have just one year in the league.

Here are the overall bowl records for WAC teams during the course of the decade. Keep in mind for Rice, UTEP, Tulsa and SMU these bowl records are only from their seasons when they were in the WAC.

Boise St and Fresno are tied with 4 bowl wins a piece. The Bulldogs have played to the level of their competition with a 4-1 mark against BCS schools but are 0-4 vs Non-BCS teams. Boise St naturally has their two Fiesta Bowl victories in the past decade and have three bowl wins vs ranked teams. Hawaii had three bowl wins in the past decade and made a BCS appearance in 2007. Overall the WAC was 15-19 overall with an impressive 4-4 record vs ranked teams.

I will be back tomorrow with a look at the team of the decade in CUSA and you may find the results to be similar to the MAC with all of the changes that have taken place over the past 10 years.

Turnovers can have a huge impact on games and on a team’s season. They can also lead to many misleading final scores. During the season I list all of the previous week’s misleading final scores on PhilSteele.com in my Monday Daily Blog. By reading about them each week you can uncover some underrated and overrated teams throughout the season.

Here are a couple of examples from last year. Iowa St benefitted from +8 in TO’s vs Nebraska and pulled out a 9-7 win. Nebraska turned it over 4 times inside the 5 yard line and lost despite a 362-239 yard edge. The next 2 weeks Iowa St was overrated and they lost by a combined 69-18 vs Texas A&M and Oklahoma St despite only being slight underdogs in each.

Florida St appeared to pummel BYU 54-28 on the road but they only had a 512-475 yard edge as they benefitted from +5 in TO’s. The next week FSU entered the Top 25 but lost to USF at home as a 2 TD favorite 17-7 and BYU bounced back with a 42-23 whipping of Colorado St.

Turnovers can not only make a difference in a game but can make the difference between a winning and losing season.

Last year there was another GREAT example. In 2008, Buffalo won the MAC Title thanks mostly to being +19 in turnovers. They were actually outgained by an avg of 408-370 during the season! Last year they had 13 returning starters and this time outgained foes 405-343. That means they went from -38 ypg to +62 ypg (100 ypg better) but their record dropped to 5-7 as the TO’s were -7.

Teams that benefitted from double-digit turnovers the previous year rarely get a repeat of that good fortune. In the last 17 years, 252 teams have had double-digit plus turnovers. Of those 252, 162 have had weaker records the following year (64.3%). Only 58 teams (23.0%) have improved their record and the other 32 had the same record. Teams with a positive double-digit TO ratio had the same or weaker record 77.0% of the time since 1996. Listed below are last year’s most fortunate teams:

Last year 17 teams were in the “Going Down” box and only 4 managed to improve their record slightly including VTech which went from 10-4 to 10-3. The teams with the biggest dropoffs were Rice which went from 10-3 to 2-10 and Oklahoma (12-2 to 8-5).

As I previously stated, if a team received bad breaks the year before, they will usually be headed for better fortune the following year. In the past 17 years, there have been 208 teams that have finished the season minus double-digits in turnovers. Of those 208 teams, 143 (69%) have had better records the next year! Teams with a negative double-digit TO ratio had the same or stronger records 80% of the time since 1996. Which teams are headed for better fortunes and better seasons?

Last year a record high 17 teams made the “Going Up” box which meant they had suffered negative double digit turnovers in 2008 and were poised to receive better fortune. Of the 17 teams, 13 (or 76.5%!) had a better record than 2008, 1 had the same record and only 3 of the 17 (17.6%) had a weaker record. There were SIX teams on that list that went from a losing season to a bowl game! Those 6 teams were SMU, Idaho, Ohio U, Wyoming, Texas A&M and UCLA!!

Turnovers also have the same impact on the pro game. At first I figured that the NFL game would not show as much of a turnaround, but was actually surprised to see that the NFL game has had more turnarounds. First of all, the NFL season is 16 games long as opposed to 12 or 13 in college. With the extra NFL games, I upped the criteria from double-digit TO’s to plus or minus 12 turnovers or .75 per game. I then analyzed all the NFL teams since 1991 that have benefited from +12 turnovers or more. In that span of 19 years there have been a total of 65 teams that benefited from +12 turnovers or more. Of those 65, 47 or 72% had weaker records the next season including 13 of 14 (93%) over the last four seasons!! There were seven teams that had the same record. Only 11 of the 65 teams (17%) were able to improve their record the next season after benefiting from +12 turnovers or more.

Last year Miami (+17) made my “Going Down Box” and the Dolphins went from 11-5 in ’08 to just 7-9 last year. Tennessee was +14 in 2008 and finished the season 13-3. Last year the Titans did not catch the same breaks and they dropped to 8-8. Baltimore went 11-5 in ’08 and made an appearance in the AFC Champ game thanks in large part to being +13 in TO’s. Last year the Ravens did not have the same fortune and fell to 9-7.

Here are the teams that were +12 or more last year and could be heading to a disappointing season….Green Bay +23, New Orleans +18 and Philadelphia +12

As I previously stated, if a teams received bad breaks the year before, they will usually be headed for better fortune the following year. Once again I was very surprised the NFL game yielded even higher percentages. Since 1991, 63 NFL teams suffered from -12 turnovers or more. Of those 63 teams, an amazing 44 or 70% had a stonger record the next season and 7 had the same record the next year. Of the 63 teams with -12 turnovers or more, only 12 or 19% did not improve their record the next season!!

Here are some teams that could be heading to better finishes this year. Detroit (-18), St Louis (-13), Oakland (-13) and Cleveland (-12).

If you like this type of information, you will love the News and Notes section which is updated weekly at PhilSteele.com. I review such information as “Misleading Final Scores” and much, much more. Keep tabs on all of these teams this year and watch how turnovers WILL EQUAL turnaround in 2010!

The magazine is out everywhere right now so make sure you pick up your copy this week. My magazine is unlike other preseason magazines….which you buy, do a quick read thru and they sit on a shelf the rest of the year.

Covering college football as I do takes 52 weeks a year as it is and while I personally do not scout the high school games and rate each player I do compile my rankings based on the many different recruiting services across the country that follow and scout HS football year round. I not only like to use all of the biggest and best services, but I also use regional reports as well. The colleges themselves use many of these services to get the latest information on recruits.

When we receive a recruiting magazine, we translate each player’s ranking into a points system from 1-100 and then log each and every player into the computer and give them a point total from each source. Naturally, the more they are mentioned and the higher they are rated by each publication, the more total points they accrue. After months of entering all of this information, I sort the list by position and by total points and then rank the players from most points to least.

In today’s blog I have included the top incoming freshman Kickers/Punters and the Top 75 Incoming Jucos for 2010. Each one of these players is ranked in the Top 500 prospects regardless of position and will appear in my preseason magazine. I have also posted the top individual classes for each position. Since we want the college preview to continue to be the most in-depth and accurate magazine out there, if you find any information that is wrong or if you are questioning a player’s ranking please contact brandon@philsteele.com. I will be back on Friday I with the top 75 overall classes and give you my conference by conference recruiting ratings.

Top Kicker Classes

1. Auburn-The Tigers return Wes Byrum but may have signed his replacement in Cody Parkey who was ranked the #1 Kicker by ESPN and Rivals. Parkey went 9-12 (75%) with all 3 misses from 49+ yds out as a senior.

2. Fresno St-The Bulldogs lost P Robert Malone who was one of the best punters in the country last year but welcome in Matt Darr who was rated the #1 P in the nation and was a 1st-tm All-American from Max Preps.

3. Michigan-The Wolverines need to find a replacement for Zoltan Mesko who was 1st-tm Big 10 and 2nd-tm All-American (AP) last year. Michigan thinks they have found his replacement in Will Hagerup an Army All-American that avg 42.9 yds on 22 punts and had 7 punts inside the 20 as a high school senior.

4. UCLA-The Bruins have a great tradition of outstanding Kickers including Kai Forbath who won the Lou Groza award as the best place-kicker in the nation last year. This year UCLA welcomes in Kip Smith a Parade All-American and 1st-tm USA Today kicker after hitting all 9 FG attempts as a senior.

5. Tennessee-The Vols signed Michael Palardy a US Army All-American that was 1st-tm All-Florida last year. He had a 49 yd punt avg as a senior and 38/43 of his KOs were touchbacks.

6. Alabama- The Crimson Tide get special mention here because they signed the #7, #16 and #21 Kickers led by Cade Foster who is currently enrolled for spring practice and is expected to be the leading replacement for Leigh Tiffin.

Top Juco Classes

1. Nebraska-The Cornhuskers bring in three of the top Juco players this year led by #3 Jemarcus Hardwick an OT who is strong and athletic. #6 Lavonte David is an OLB prospect from Fort Scott CC and has great quickness and #27 Chase Harper is a TE that has good hands, solid speed and is big enough to break tackles down the field.

2. Mississippi-Ole Miss brings in a great class of Jucos led by #1 Randall Mackey a QB that was named National Offensive Juco Player of the Year after throwing for 3,122 yds, rushing for 579, and totaling 32 TDs last year. The Rebels also bring in #14 Wayne Dorsey a DE that has superior pass rushing skills and the height and length you look for in a pure pass rusher.

3. Auburn-The Tigers bring in four top 40 players and are led by #2 Cameron Newton, a former Florida QB that passed for 2833 yds (22 TDs) and had 655 rush yds (16 TD) while leading Blinn College to the JC national title last year. Auburn also signed #19 Roszell Gayden a big OT from the College of the Sequoias in California. The Tigers also bring in #34 Joel Bonomolo and #37 Brandon Mosley.

4. Arizona St-The Sun Devils signed four players that finished in my top 75 led by #9 Brice Schwab a huge OT prospect that excels in pass protection. Arizona St will also welcome #12 George Bell a WR who will be a big weapon in the passing game, with his size and speed.

5. Kansas St-HC Bill Snyder always brings in a good class of Juco players and this year is no different with four players in the top 75. The group is led by #11 Adam Davis a DE from Fort Scott CC and has exceptional quickness off the edge.

There were very few games this week so it wasn’t as tough to earn a Top 20 spot from my computer’s average individual grades as there was only 34 performances to grade. Therefore, I will cut it off at the Top 14 this week.

Alabama’s big 32-13 win over #1 Florida easily gave them the #1 grade for the week as the Tide had a 490-335 yd edge including a 251-88 rush edge. Alabama controlled the line of scrimmage as well as the clock having a 39:37-20:23 edge in TOP as the Tide advanced to the national title game.

Coming in at #2 was Washington’s domination of California as they pounded the lethargic Bears 42-10 with a 167 yd edge.

Wisconsin’s pummeling of Hawaii on the Islands earned them the #3 spot as they won 51-10 with a 340 yard edge. Keep in mind Hawaii was playing to get a bowl bid.

While Oregon only beat Oregon St by 4, they outgained a strong foe by 100 yards at home in Autzen and that earned my computer’s #4 spot.

Despite the Loss, Nebraska earned the #5 spot by holding Texas to just 202 total yds. The Horns came into the game avg 451.6 ypg and the 18 yds rushing by the Horns were their lowest total on the season. The Huskers rattled Colt McCoy with 8 sacks.

At #6 is Texas as they played great defense as well holding the Cornhuskers to just 106 yds and outgained Nebraska by 96 yds.

Georgia Tech ran for 333 yds in their 39-34 win over Clemson in the ACC Championship. to earn the #7 spot. The Yellow Jackets had a 469-414 yd edge and were +2 in TO’s.

Arizona went on the road and beat USC outgaining them by 39 yards and that was good enough for the computer’s #8 ranking this week.

Oregon St despite the loss comes in at #9 as they went into Autzen Stadium and only lost by 4.

While Cincinnati needed a last minute TD to pull out a win over Pittsburgh, they were taking on a top-notch team on the road and it was good enough for my computer’s #10 spot.

Last year it was wildly popular when we had the Bowl Confidence Poll appear on the site and once again this year I’ll be doing that. Due to the fact we will not be having Top 25 forecasts this week, I will have a lot more time to get some different things up so check out my daily blog for the latest bowl action.

Troy/FIU was a misleading 42-33 final as the Panthers managed to score 17 of their points in the final 1:10 of the 1H and on the final play of the game. Troy jumped out to a 28-10 lead but FIU got a 49 yard 6 play drive for a TD with 1:10 left in the half then after a fumble got a 22 yard FG with :08 left to cut it to 28-20 at halftime. Troy led 42-20 after 3Q’s. FIU got a TD with 6:03 left to cut it to 15. Their last gasp appeared to end when on 4th & goal from the 6 they fired incomplete but Troy on 4th & 12 took a knee on its own 2 with :04 left and FIU got a 2 yard TD pass with no time remaining to only lose by 9.

San Jose St made a game of it against Fresno St early even leading 14-7 after the 1Q. After San Jose St missed a 42 yard FG with the score tied at 14, Fresno got 2 TD’s and a FG in the final 5:21 of the half to lead 31-14 with a 310-159 1H yard edge. FSU was up 41-14 when they punted with 1:01 left and San Jose St got a 59 yd TD pass with :09 left to “only” lose by 20.

A look at the score shows a dominating 35-15 Utah win over UNLV but the Utes were fortunate. UNLV actually had a 23-14 FD edge and the yards were even at 327. UNLV blew a ton of chances and also set up Utah for some easy scores. After a Utah fmbl UNLV had a 1st & goal at the 3 but settled for a 21 yard FG. UNLV went on a 71/10pl drive and once again had a 1st & gl but this time a holding penalty brought back a 5 yd run and they settled for a 26 yard FG and trailed 7-6 mid-2Q. Utah got a 51 yard drive for a TD but then returned an interception 31 yards to the 8 and got a TD 2 plays later to lead 21-6. UNLV was driving to get back within a score but Clayton was intercepted. The return was fumbled and Johnson picked it up and raced 64 yards for a Utah TD and it was 28-6 with 1:11 left in the 1H. UNLV got to the Utah 21 with :07 left when the Utes called time out. The Rebels threw one more incomplete pass but amazingly the clock ran out on them and they didn’t even get a FG. UNLV trailed by 22 points at the half despite having a 186-154 yard edge! UNLV went on an 8 play drive for a TD to open the 3Q but missed the 2 point conversion, 28-12. After a Utah 3 & out the Rebels went on a 55/10 pl drive but settled for a 37 yard FG. UNLV had a 1st & goal at the 7 but faked a FG and it fell incomplete from the 13. Utah went 87/7 pl for a TD to make some of their fans happy as they went up by 20 with 12:55 left. UNLV had a couple more chances. They went 79/9 pl but on 4th & goal from the 2 their pass fell incomplete. UNLV punted on their last drive with 3:07 left.

It took UCF 21 offensive possessions to score a point on Miami’s defense as last year both of their TD’s came on defensive and special teams scores. This year UCF missed a 32 yard FG on its first drive (65 yards, 12 plays). Miami went 80 yards in 8 plays and 35 yards in 9 plays for a TD and FG and led 10-0 at the half. Miami went 51 yards in 3 plays for a TD to open the 3Q, but UCF went 80 yards in 9 plays and finally got an offensive score with a TD, 17-7 (9:18). Miami’s P fumbled the snap and kicked the ball out of bounds at the 2 but UCF was intercepted on 3rd & goal at the 6. Miami drove for a 46 yard FG and led 20-7 after 3Q’s then went 61 yards in 9 plays for a TD to go up by 20 with 10:46 left. Miami went on a 12 play drive eating up nearly 8:00 punting with :48 left and finished with 28-11 FD and 363-229 yard edges.

Arizona St and Washington both went on a long TD drives to open the game. Two possessions later ASU got a 65/4pl drive for a TD and led 14-7. Each went on a long drive but UW was intercepted at the 1 and ASU fumbled into the EZ for a touchback. UW went on a 50/16pl drive but missed a 48 yard FG on the 2Q’s final play. ASU missed a 41 yard FG early 3Q. ASU drove 87/7pl for a 24 yard FG and UW drove 72/7pl for a 23 yard TD run and led 17-14 after 3Q’s. ASU drove 38/9pl but missed a 40 yard FG with 6:56 left and UW drove 67/8pl for a 29 yard FG to tie it with 3:50 left. On 3rd & 1 UW passed incomplete and punted with :13 left and ASU returned it 9 yards. Apparently headed for overtime, ASU threw a deep pass which was caught for a 50 yard TD for the win with :05 left.

Alabama got a 77 yard IR TD early in the game but the Tide also settled for a 25 yard FG, fumbled at the South Carolina 44 and missed a 49 yard FG. They led 13-6 at the half with a 207-119 yard edge. SC missed a 50 yd FG early 4Q and after SC punted with 7:55 left, Mark Ingram took over. He got every touch on the next drive running six times for 68 yards including his 4 yard TD run with 4:54 left, 20-6. SC went 71 yards in 14 plays but was SOD at the 4.

Stanford had some big leads against Arizona. After a 19 yard TD pass, they led 28-13 with 3:04 left in the 2Q. UA drove 89 yards in 12 plays for a TD with :18 left. At the half Stanford had a 315-235 yard edge and led by 8. Stanford led 38-29 when they missed a 36 yard FG which would have put them up by 11 with 12:42 left. Arizona struck quickly getting a 43 yard TD run with 10:06 left to pull within 2. UA fumbled at their own 27 but Stanford dropped a FD pass on 4th & 2 with 5:27 left. Arizona got 1 FD and then on 3rd & 17 Grigsby got a 57 yard TD run to give Arizona the lead, 43-38. Stanford got to the Arizona 12 but on 4th& 10 fired incomplete.

Virginia Tech led 3-0 with 3:54 left in the half. Georgia Tech would complete just 1 of 7 passes in the game but got a 51 yard pass to Thomas down to the VT12 which set up a TD with :32 left 2Q to make it 7-3 GT. At the half VT had a 130-108 yard edge and GT had only 57 yards rushing in the first 2Q’s. GT scored 2 TD’s on their first 3 possessions of the 2nd half to lead 21-10 but fumbled at the VT20. VT drove 77 yards in 6 plays for a TD with 4:52 left, 21-16. GT faced a 3rd & 7 when they got a 39 yard TD run with 3:00 left to make it 28-16. VT went 61 yards in 5 plays for a TD with 1:48 left but GT recovered the onside kick.

Despite being forced to start true frosh QB Dantin due to the injury to Aaron Opelt, Toledo was in control in the 1H vs Northern Illinois as they had a 204-57 yard edge and led the game 14-0. It could have been worse but Toledo fumbled at the NI10. NI drove for a TD with 1:27 left in the half and UT missed a 50 yard FG and the Rockets led 14-6. After NI went on a 13 play drive for a TD, Toledo fumbled at the NI21. A Toledo interception at their own 12 set up NI for a 2 play drive for a TD and NI led 19-14. The Huskies had an xp blocked after their first TD and missed the 2 point conversion after scoring their 3rd TD. UT drove 90/10pl for a TD to make it 20-19 (2ptng) with 7:03 left. Toledo punted with 2:43 left and NI got a 4th & 13, 21 yard FD pass out to their 43 and a 28 yard pass to the UT29 but a 42 yard FG was blocked with :44 left as the Rockets hung on.

North Texas/Florida Atlantic was a wild one. NT led early 2Q 19-7 (2 missed xp’s for the Mean Green) but FAU scored the next 30 points to lead 37-19 after the Owls took their first drive of the 3Q 75/9pl for a TD. FAU punted on their next 2 possessions and were SOD at the NT35 with 12:06 left and NT went 65 yards in 2 plays for a TD to take the lead, 40-37. NT was SOD at the FAU29 with 8:06 left and FAU drove 71 yards in 7 plays for a TD with 4:55 left for the lead. NT got 1 FD but was SOD at their own 39 and FAU ran out the clock.

Missouri/Oklahoma St was closer than the final. In fact, at half Missouri had a 323-224 yard edge. During the game, Missouri went on a 78/14pl drive but settled for a 21 yard FG and they were SOD at the OSU 34, 21 and 10 yard lines on three separate drives. OSU got a 26 yard IR TD mid2Q and scored a TD with :02 left in the half to actually lead 24-17. For the game Missouri had a 393-351 yard edge but OSU did lead 33-17 almost the entire 4Q.

Normally when a game is on TV, I immediately pick up on a misleading final. The Maryland/Virginia game was on in the upper left-hand corner TV set, the one I pay the least amount of attention to but I’m still surprised that this one slipped through the cracks. I just looked at the play-by-play and Maryland had 17-9 FD and 284-201 yard edges despite losing 20-9. It was a game of blown opportunities and bad breaks for the Terps. In the 2Q Maryland held Virginia to -3 yards on 19 plays. They did fumble at the Virginia 25 in the 1Q and would have a 4-1 turnover deficit in this game. Maryland was SOD on 4th & 2 at the Virginia 40 but led 6-3 at the half settling for FG’s of 48 and 30 yards on a game played on a cold, drizzly day. Maryland drove 53 yards in 8 plays but settled for a 29 yard FG and led 9-3. After Virginia got a 31 yard FG, Maryland was intercepted and returned 32 yards for a TD. Maryland then drove 45 yards in 12 plays and 42 yards in 11 plays but missed 37 and 44 yard FG’s and still trailed by 4. They went for it on 4th & 17 from their own 2 with 1:47 left and were stopped and UVA punched in a TD on the next play. UVA totalled 2 yards of offense on their 2 TD drives.
