It seems like every day I am circling 5-10 players who have been lost for the season for one reason or another. You need to go to the injury list on the front page and update your magazine. There are nearly 600 players that were lost since the magazine was written which is about 5 players per team! I use a red pen to circle players that were lost prior to the year and then a blue pen to circle players lost during the year. This gives you a real good idea of the most beat up and also the most injury free teams during the year. Remember when Oklahoma won their national title in 2000 they had ZERO starters miss ZERO games with injury. Also in 2007 Utah went just 9-4 as they led the nation in starts lost to injury. How did that team do with less injuries in 2008? They went unbeaten and finished #2 in the country! I keep a weekly tally of starts lost for the year with injury and will have a list here on PhilSteele.com each week.
Here are some key players that will not be playing this season: Read more…
The magazine is printed as late as possible and we send it off to the press in the middle of May. 95% of what is written is still completely accurate come August. Every year though there are some players who have left the program for one reason or another during the summer and we will have those players updated in the 2010 “Out for the Year” section, which we have just posted on the site. (see below)
What I do in my personal magazine is circle the players that are lost and that way you can tell at a glance which teams suffer the most attrition and those that do not lose anybody. Prior to the season, the players who were lost during the summer and in fall practice are circled in red while the players lost during the season to injury or suspension are circled in blue. Here are some notes from my reading since Tuesday and an injury list as of this morning.
Washington win over #3 USC was the 9th time since the debut of the coaches poll in 1950 that a team from a current BCS conference league went winless the previous year and then upset a ranked team the next year. In 1958 #3 Ohio St lost to a Northwestern team that was 0-9 in 1957 and that upset by Washington tied Northwestern for the higest ranked team that a previous years winless team knocked off.

When a QB or top RB goes out, it makes all the local papers and everyone knows about it. There have been some major losses to some defenses that do no make the paper but could have a big impact this year so make sure you check out my latest updates in the INJURY SECTION of the website. I normally do an injury/personnel update on Fridays but this week I will do one today and then another on Friday.

Just to let you know the players lost for the season are piling up fast. It seems like every day I am circling 5 to 10 additional players for the magazine. I always circle the players in my magazine in RED if they were lost prior to the year and then in BLUE if they were lost during the season. That way I can differentiate between the two.
Make sure you check out the Injury Section to get all the players that have been lost so far.
Over last weekend I put up the College injury blog which updated all the players to circle in the magazine. With most teams opening camps this week there has been a large influx of players to be circled in the magazine. I just wanted to remind you that we do update this list daily! It is right in the blue tab on the left. Get the updated injury list.

I’ve been using my daily blogs to share what goes into my division forecasts for the NFL. Today I would like to analyze starters lost in the NFL and just how important it really is.
The chart below is how many starts were lost by each NFL team over the past 3 seasons. I would like to thank Rich Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News for these numbers as we use his totals to be consistent from one season to another. The green blocks represent a top 5 number meaning the fewest injuries lost in a season or the 3 year total while the red number indicates being in the NFL’s bottom 5. Each lost start represents a game missed by a starter. For example when NE’s QB Tom Brady was injured in the opening game he would represent 15 of NE’s 64 starts lost. The chart to the left are starts lost for the last 3 seasons and a 3 year total. The chart on the right represents a teams number of wins. Read more…
