These 2 have met twice before with MO taking both incl their last matchup 24-3 in ‘76. This is NC’s 4th str bowl (1-2) and 29th overall. LY NC defeated Tenn 30-27 after a controversial call in regulation cost the Vols the win (NC kicked the GW FG in the 2nd OT) in the Music City Bowl. This is Withers’ 1st bowl as a HC but he has been DC the L/3 bowls here under Davis. The Tigers head to their 8th bowl under Pinkel (3-4) and their 3rd Independence (1-1) with their 38-31 ‘05 win over SC the biggest bowl comeback win in school history (trailed 21-0 after 1Q). MO was snubbed by the B12’s bowl tie-ins but were helped by their outgoing conf to find a home in Shreveport. It’s put up or shut up time for Tiger fans who have been stereotyped as poor travelers. NC is 5-4 vs 9 bowl caliber tms being outscored 26-25 and outgained 370-356 (outFD’d in 7 out of 9). MO went 3-5 S vs bowl opp outscoring foes 31-30 and outgaining them 474-460. NC was 1-4 on the road while MO was 1-4. NC has 8 Sr’s among 14 upperclassmen while MO has 11 Sr’s and 18 upperclassmen. These tms are very similar but North Carolina’s DL has reaped praise from many opposing coaches and their disruptiveness can actually be a difference in the gm. The Heels also will have the edge with the skill players on the field but I will go with the more exp’d HC and staff in this one.

WV and NCSt meet for the 10th time and 3rd time overall in the bowls but this is the first meeting S/’79. Both tms faced Cincinnati and Maryland with WV winning both by an avg score of 34-14 while NCSt was 1-1 losing to MD in the finale, a game they needed to win to earn an ACC Title berth. WV fans are known for travelling well and the Champs Bowl bypassed a chance to get ND to take the Mountaineers TY but they may be regretting that decision now as ticket sales have been very poor.
On the other side the Pack’s #47 offense is led by prolific Jr Wilson, who may be playing in his final gm here (MLB). He enters this gm leading the ACC in pass ypg and ttl off and has put up 12 300 yd pass gms in his career. The #44 D is led by NCSt’s outstanding group of LB’s. Nate Irving, who DNP LY after a horrific car accident, has rebounded to be #2 in the ACC in tfl including setting a schl rec’d with 8 tfl vs WF surpassing #1 DC Mario Williams record of 6 (‘05). The ST’s (#103) seemed to take a hit when PK Czajkowski was declared OFY in early Nov. He came back vs rival UNC and hit a 47 yd FG in the 4 pt gm. The PR unit avg 9.3 ypr but has recorded an outstanding 3 PR TD’s while the Pack gives up 21.9 with 2 TD on KR.

WV’s season has been a little rocky and ultimately disappointing as they narrowly missed out on a BCS Bowl due to B2B losses to Syr and a 16-13 loss in OT to Connecticut. After those 2 losses fans were calling for HC Stewart to be ousted, but the Mountaineers were able to regroup on their bye week and won their L/4 gms. However that was not good enough as they introduced former Ok St OC Dana Holgorsen as their new HC (will take over in 2012) just a few days ago but he was not part of the bowl preparations. QB Smith had great stats overall in his 1st year as a st’r but had some rough outings in the tm’s 2 losses with a 1-3 ratio vs Syr and Conn (WV -6 TO’s in those 2 gms). Star RB Devine was hampered by a foot inj all yr and his production fell drastically (-581 yds) but he managed to play in every gm. WV’s (#4) defense is vastly underrated as they are #2 in the nation in rush D allowing just 85 ypg and have only all’d 3 rush TD’s (#1 in NCAA). WV is #59 in my ST rankings finishing #3 in the BE in net punting (37.4) but having just avg numbers on returns.
West Virginia imploded with a couple poor mid-season performances but since then have demonstrated just how talented they are beating 3 of their L/4 opps by 21+ pts. The D has not all’d any opp to top 21 pts (only team in the NCAA) while the offense has topped 35 in 3 of the L/4 gms. NCSt has trailed at HT in 4 of their L/6 gms and have been fortunate in several of their wins. Offenses are almost even, but a huge defensive edge to WV.

Big 12 Team of the Decade

July 7th, 2010 No comments

For the next two weeks, I will be taking a look at the conference teams of the decade for 2000-2009. Factored into my analysis will be conference win %, conference and division titles, bowl games and bowl wins. I will also include BCS bowl wins, final AP rankings and number of national championships for the major conferences. There have been several teams who have changed conferences during that time and I will include them in the analysis for any season(s) they were affiliated with that certain conference. I will also be doing a breakdown of how the conference did in bowl games during the decade and I will emphasis the overall win/loss record, the number of BCS bowl wins, and the records against Non-BCS and ranked bowl teams. Thoughts On Expansion and USC’s Probation

June 11th, 2010 3 comments

When it comes to college football, I am a traditionalist.  The one thing I love about college football is of all the sports, college or pro, the regular season in college football is the one that means the most. I also love the rivalries and the tradition of the bowls. While I have been calling for a system that pits the #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 teams in the Jan 1 bowls for nearly a decade, I am vehemently against an 8 or 16 team playoff which would destroy the bowls and make the regular season meaningless.

In 1995 I was actually sad to see the SWC fold as I really enjoyed the great tradition and history of that conference.

From the recent news of Nebraska joining the Big Ten and Colorado heading to the Pac-10, it looks like college football re-alignment and expansion is going forward and I think it will move quickly. However, unlike some of the past radical changes to college football, I actually look forward to seeing which programs end up where and I salivate at the possibility of there being multiple super conferences. Incoming Freshman: Top QBs/RBs

March 29th, 2010 2 comments

Covering college football as I do takes 52 weeks a year as it is and while I personally do not scout the high school games and rate each player I do compile my rankings based on the many different recruiting services across the country that follow and scout HS football year round. I not only like to use all of the biggest and best services, but I also use regional reports as well. The colleges themselves use many of these services to get the latest information on recruits.

When we receive a recruiting magazine, we translate each player’s ranking into a points system from 1-100 and then log each and every player into the computer and give them a point total from each source. Naturally, the more they are mentioned and the higher they are rated by each publication, the more total points they accrue. After months of entering all of this information, I sort the list by poistion and by total points and then rank the players from most points to least.

In today’s blog I have included the top incoming freshman QBs and RBs for 2010. Each one of these players is ranked in the Top 500 prospects regardless of position and will appear in my preseason magazine. I have also posted the top individual classes for each position. Since we want the college preview to continue to be the most in-depth and accurate magazine out there, if you find any informataion that is wrong or if you are questioning a player’s ranking please contact brandon@philsteele.com. In Wednesday’s Blog I will post the top WR’s and TE’s with the top OL and DL coming on Friday.

Most Improved Pass Offense in 2009

February 26th, 2010 No comments

In my 2009 College Preview Magazine on pgs 324 and 327 I included my computer’s projected stats in 2009 for all 120 FBS teams. There were several different categories including rush offense/defense, pass offense/defense, offensive pts and defensive pts.

On the right hand side of the page I listed the teams that my computer projected to be most improved in ’09 compared to ’08 season in 6 different categories. I had them ranked in order from Most Improved all the way down to the Least Improved and included the top 15 in each category along with the bottom 5.

In today’s blog I have included my projections of the teams I thought would be most improved in pass offense heading into the 2009 season and how they finished in the final NCAA rankings.

In the coming days I will feature a different category in each blog and I think you will be happy with the results of the accuracy of my projections.

More Week 7 News and Notes

Troy/FIU was a misleading 42-33 final as the Panthers managed to score 17 of their points in the final 1:10 of the 1H and on the final play of the game. Troy jumped out to a 28-10 lead but FIU got a 49 yard 6 play drive for a TD with 1:10 left in the half then after a fumble got a 22 yard FG with :08 left to cut it to 28-20 at halftime. Troy led 42-20 after 3Q’s. FIU got a TD with 6:03 left to cut it to 15. Their last gasp appeared to end when on 4th & goal from the 6 they fired incomplete but Troy on 4th & 12 took a knee on its own 2 with :04 left and FIU got a 2 yard TD pass with no time remaining to only lose by 9.
