In the 1st meeting between these programs one long postssn losing streak will end as A&M has lost their L/5 with their lone win S/’95 (1-9) coming in the defunct Galleryfurniture.com Bowl which was played in the Astrodome. The Ags are 1-4 vs B10 tms in bowls. NW is in its 4th str bowl under Fitzgerald where they are 0-3 but all have been by a TD or less. He has made it a primary goal to get the program’s 2nd ever bowl win as they’ve lost their L/8 S/’48. The Ags are cch’d here by DC DeRuyter after HC Sherman got the ax. College Station is less than a 2 hr drive from Houston so Maroon should flood the stands but Fitzgerald is familiar with the terrain making an estimated 100 recruiting trips over the yrs to the area as 5 Cats are from Houston. A&M was 1-4 on the road TY but were only outscored by 1 ppg while outgaining foes 498-386. NW was 3-3 on the road outscoring foes 32-30 and outgaining them 440-433. A&M went 3-6 vs bowl tms outscoring them 37-32 and outgaining them 509-414. NW was 1-5 vs bowl squads getting outscored 35-27 and outgained 429-418. The Aggies have 7 Sr st’r among 17 upperclassmen while the Cats have 10 Sr’s and 16. At first glance clearly the Aggies have the better personnel on offense, defense and ST’s but I do think NW’s QB Persa will make things interesting in what should be a high scoring and entertaining bowl.

Who Will Be This Year’s Surprise Team?

June 29th, 2011 4 comments

Do you think it is easy picking a National Champ prior to the year? Since 1994, only 3 times has the preseason #1 team gone on to win the National Title. In 2008, Georgia was the preseason #1 team but I had FLORIDA to win the title and the Gators delivered for me!! Athlon was the only other source to have Florida #1. In 2007 NO Magazine had LSU or Ohio St #1 (USC was the consensus #1). In 2006, National Champ Florida was not picked #1 by ANY magazine and they were picked anywhere from #4 down to #20. They were #7 in the preseason AP Poll and #8 in the Coaches’ Poll. In 2005 everyone had USC again and no one had the actual Champ, Texas. Only in 1999 (everyone with Florida St), 2001 (two magazines) and 2004 (everyone with USC) did any of the Big 9 preseason magazines correctly pick the National Champ. Read more…

Projected Preseason AP Top 10

February 11th, 2011 13 comments

Well here it is, my projected AP Top 10 for next year as of February 11, 2011! I will mention it now and I will mention it numerous times throughout today’s blog but this is not MY preseason Top 10 for next year, it is where I project the AP Top 10 to come out at the start of the season.

Most AP voters usually look at a couple of criteria when they evaluate a team for the upcoming season. First they look at the number of returning starters that the team has coming back particularly at the offensive skill positions. A team that returns its starting QB and a combination of its RB and WRs is often times more highly thought of than a team that loses its starting QB but returns its entire offensive line. Similarly a team that returns most of its starters on offense but loses a lot of its defensive playmakers usually is more highly thought of than a team that returns a majority of its defensive starters but loses its skill position players on offense.

Another factor that is heavily weighted is the performance of the team in the bowl game, which undoubtedly is the lasting image of that team in the offseason. A team coming off a huge bowl win usually is more highly thought of than a team that is coming off a bowl loss regardless of what their schedule looks like for the upcoming season.

Using these criteria and a few more, I project the preseason AP Top 10 every year at the conclusion of the previous season, which in most cases is nearly 6 months in advance. Now as you all know, a lot can happen from January to August including injuries, suspensions, transfers, etc. Read more…

2011 Returning Starters!

January 26th, 2011 3 comments

We have already been working hard on the 2011 season and Today’s blog is the current list for Returning Starters for each team in 2011 broken down by offense, defense and special teams (kicker/punter). The * on the offense number denotes that the starting QB is returning. Below the list I broke down teams with the most/least returning starters.

I will be back later this week with all the Senior Bowl/Pro Bowl coverage you need to prepare you for this weekend’s games. On Monday I will expand on the Las Vegas odds to win the 2011 BCS National Championship and give you a breakdown of each of the 50 teams including key starters back/lost. Read more…

These teams have a rich history with LSU having a 26-20-3 advantage with the last meeting in ‘95. The bowl is a 3 hr drive from College Station and A&M has played Ark in this stadium the L/2Y (0-2). After a 3-3 start which saw ?’s about HC Sherman’s future the Aggies rallied for 6 straight wins to secure their 1st Cotton Bowl invite S/’04. It is the Aggies 12th Cotton Bowl overall where they’re 4-7. Miles suffered his 1st bowl loss at LSU (4-1) LY 19-17 to Penn St in a muddy Capital One Bowl. This is LSU’s 1st trip to the Cotton Bowl S/’02 so there should be a strong following.
The Big 12’s pressn OPY QB Johnson had shoulder surgury which limited his offseason participation and seemed out of sync in Sept behind a rebuilt OL. After Johnson became A&M’s all-time ydg leader vs KU he was benched for bkup WR Tannehill. Tannehill was efficient (235, 65%, 11-3) in the L/6 and his ability to get rid of the ball quickly helped the OL as he was sk’d just 10x in his 5 sts vs 25 in Johnson’s 7. Michael and Gray shared TB carries until Michael was OFY vs TT. Gray took over running for 100+ in the L/6 becoming A&M’s 1st 1,000 yd rusher S/’03. A&M has my #19 off and #24 defense. New DC DeRuyter moved the Ags back to the 3-4 the same formation as the legendary Wrecking Crew. The LB unit (top 4 tkl’rs) was the Big 12’s best led by Butkus Winner Miller. A&M finished #1 in the league in rush D thanks to their DL whose job is to clog rush lanes. The Ags are #11 pass eff D (241, 61%, 16-15). The ST’s were a disappointment at #67 with the B12’s worst net P (34.2). K Bullock hit 15-19 but was just 2-3 from 40+.
LSU has had another strange season in which they started out 7-0 climbing to #6 in the AP poll before a loss to Auburn. Miles was said to be on the hotseat early in the season especially after a near-loss to Tenn in which UT rec’d a fmbl’d snap with no time left, but LSU RB Ridley scored the GW TD on an untimed down after UT was called for 13 men on the field. The criticism waned after upsets of FL and AL, but losing the finale to Ark has restarted the fire-Les Miles talk again. Miles was forced to alternate QB’s all yr as Jefferson is the better runner and Lee the better passer but Lee only had 6 att in the L/2 gms. Ridley was a nice surprise and the RB’s stayed healthy TY. On defense LSU is #13 in my pass D rankings all’g 166 ypg (56%) with a 12-16 ratio led by Thorpe/Bednarik winner CB Patrick Peterson. Peterson also helped the ST earn their #4 ranking as a standout RS. LSU also has AA PK Jasper who also helps P Helton as the 2 comb for a 43.6 avg and 39.2 net. Read more…

Thoughts On Expansion and USC’s Probation

June 11th, 2010 3 comments

When it comes to college football, I am a traditionalist.  The one thing I love about college football is of all the sports, college or pro, the regular season in college football is the one that means the most. I also love the rivalries and the tradition of the bowls. While I have been calling for a system that pits the #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 teams in the Jan 1 bowls for nearly a decade, I am vehemently against an 8 or 16 team playoff which would destroy the bowls and make the regular season meaningless.

In 1995 I was actually sad to see the SWC fold as I really enjoyed the great tradition and history of that conference.

From the recent news of Nebraska joining the Big Ten and Colorado heading to the Pac-10, it looks like college football re-alignment and expansion is going forward and I think it will move quickly. However, unlike some of the past radical changes to college football, I actually look forward to seeing which programs end up where and I salivate at the possibility of there being multiple super conferences. Preseason All-Big 12 and CUSA Teams

May 26th, 2010 No comments

In today’s blog, I will continue releasing my Preseason All-Conference Teams with the All-Big 12 and All-CUSA Teams.

In the Big 12, Oklahoma leads the way with eight 1st Team selections led by All-American Candidates RB DeMarco Murray (705, 4.1) and WR/PR Ryan Broyles who had 1,120 rec yds (12.6) and 15 TD’s to go along with his 15.9 PR avg (1 TD). Texas is 2nd with five players including four on a defense that returns seven starters from from a unit that allowed just 252 ypg and 16.7 ppg last year. Read more…

Incoming Freshman: Top OL/DL

April 2nd, 2010 3 comments

Covering college football as I do takes 52 weeks a year as it is and while I personally do not scout the high school games and rate each player I do compile my rankings based on the many different recruiting services across the country that follow and scout HS football year round. I not only like to use all of the biggest and best services, but I also use regional reports as well. The colleges themselves use many of these services to get the latest information on recruits.

When we receive a recruiting magazine, we translate each player’s ranking into a points system from 1-100 and then log each and every player into the computer and give them a point total from each source. Naturally, the more they are mentioned and the higher they are rated by each publication, the more total points they accrue. After months of entering all of this information, I sort the list by position and by total points and then rank the players from most points to least.

In today’s blog I have included the top incoming freshman OL and DL for 2010. Each one of these players is ranked in the Top 500 prospects regardless of position and will appear in my preseason magazine. I have also posted the top individual classes for each position. Since we want the college preview to continue to be the most in-depth and accurate magazine out there, if you find any information that is wrong or if you are questioning a player’s ranking please contact brandon@philsteele.com. I will be back on Monday with my top LBs and DBs. Have a great weekend!
