Phil’s Week 7 College Fantasy Picks

October 15th, 2009 5 comments

Last week was a good but not great week. I will grade it 3-2-1 and that means the last 3 weeks the record is 10-4-2 as I went 3-1-1 in week 5 and 4-1 in week 4! I’m looking to bounce back for another big week and I found so many good surprise candidates this week that I have 2 picks in each category.

Here are my picks for top QB (with reasoning), RB, WR and Defenses of the Week plus an Upset Special. I also give you reasoning on several Others to Watch. Keep in mind these are NOT the obvious picks. I do not take the nation’s leading passer facing a weak secondary and pick him as my QB of the Week. These are mostly SURPRISE projections and I tell you why.

More Week 6 News and Notes

October 13th, 2009 No comments

Hawaii was starting their 3rd string QB, Bryant Moniz, a walk-on and they trailed Fresno St 42-3 mid-4Q before they got a TD with 7:25 left. The Warriors recovered an onside kick and got another TD with 4:42 left. Fresno St recovered the final onside attempt and finished the game at the Hawaii 22. FSU led 28-3 at the half despite only having a 249-171 yard edge as UH had a 43 yard FG blocked, Moniz was intercepted in the endzone and they also settled for a 33 yard FG. It was 21-3 when Hawaii fumbled a punt at their own 30 with 1:39 left in the half which set up a 17 yd TD pass from Colburn to West with :11 left.

What a Weekend! (Week 6)

October 11th, 2009 3 comments

I wasn’t too thrilled with some of yesterday’s results as far as the magazine goes but I still have an excellent shot at being the most accurate magazine in the country this year. Naturally a lot depends on how the rest of the season goes.

The last two weeks I have put up the average rankings’ top teams each Saturday but I will try to do that earlier this week, perhaps on Wednesday or Thursday. I hope that you checked out the Saturday News and Notes for a lot of interesting things I read throughout the week and as I get more and more caught up this football season, I will continue to put more into those News and Notes each Saturday as well. I may even have my overall power play rankings and add in some other rankings beside the +/- this week. Let’s take a look at this past weekend’s performances.

Phil’s Week 6 Top 25 Forecasts

October 7th, 2009 13 comments

Every week we will post my Forecasts of all the games involving Top 25 teams. As usual, it includes my computer’s projected box score for each game.

So far this year the Top 25 Forecasts have gone 84-20 81% picking the winners of each game. That record may sound great, but do keep in mind most games have involved teams that were big favorites so the majority of people will have a solid record on these games as well. On the bottom of the forecast, I have listed some Upset Specials which have pulled the upset 8 out of 14 times. Combined the first five weeks record is 95-29 77%!!

Let’s get to my Top 25 Forecasts!

Post Week 5 Non-Conference Projections

October 6th, 2009 5 comments

With non-conference games winding down, it’s no surprise to see that the SEC continued it’s domination of non-conference foes taking the top spot every week of the poll. The ACC became just the second team to project a winning record vs non-conference BCS teams. The Big Ten continued to hold the second place spot in the overall projected record and the record vs non-conference FBS teams. The MAC continues to sit in the basement in 2 of 3 categories.

As you have probably noticed that there has been a change to a new interactive blog which many feel is an upgrade with the technical advantages to it, although it does give a completely different look to the blog. What we’ll be doing from now on, is having two blogs up on the site, you can look at it in the interactive version, comment and interact and the old version as well, with just the text available. That will be listed on the home page with a “Looking for the Old Blog Format – CLICK HERE” link.

The San Diego St/New Mexico St game was closer than the final. While the Aztecs led 17-7 mid-3Q, New Mexico St tied it at 17 with 12:27 left. San Diego St threw incomplete on 4th & 1 but pass interference gave them a FD and they continued on a 78 yard, 9 play drive for a TD. New Mexico St’s punter fumbled the snap which led to an 18 yard FG for the Aztecs then after a 39 yd IR to the 5 two plays later with just 2:56 left, San Diego St punched in a TD on 2nd down.

Here is the final segment for the conference teams of the decade and I look at the MWC, CUSA and WAC. TCU was a member of all three conferences this decade.
